On a snowy weekend in December we saw some of our divers compete at the English Schools Championships at the London Aquatics Centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Abbie Hindle, Dominique Hinchcliffe, Holly Waxman, Koben O’Driscoll and Joseph Nicol were selected to represent the North East following their performances in competitions during the course of the year.
After an early meet on the Saturday at John Charles Centre, Leeds our divers travelled down as part of the North East contingent via Coach with squad members from Leeds and Sheffield.
On the Sunday each diver had one competition to participate in. Koben dived first in the Junior Boys 1m springboard and put in a very steady performance to win the silver medal. Dominique followed with a very respectable performance coming 10th of 18 in the 3m springboard.
Abbie Hindle kept her composure to put in an excellent performance – under the close watch of visiting VIP Tom Daley – on the 1m springboard. Abbie and her North East team mates Maisie Bond, Rebecca Vega bagged the squad some major points helping the team win the ‘best overall team’ trophy.
Joseph Nicol competed on the 3m springboard and came close to a podium finish amassing 223.6 points but perhaps the most impressive performance of the day was from COBE’s Holly Waxman who competed in the Intermediate Girls Platform event and totally blew away the field – including the 2017 European Junior Diving Gold medallist – winning her competition by over 30 points, claiming gold and once again confirming her position as one of the country’s best young divers.
It was great to see our divers playing a fundamental role in securing the overall team award for the North East region and having the opportunity to stand on the podium and a receive medals from Tom Daley himself.
It was also to see some of the COBE diving Mum’s getting in on the act to have selfie’s taken with Tom 😉
